and death rates are lower. In less developed countries the birth rate is high, but so is infant mortality as well as the death rate. Famine, diseases, and wars over the last few decades have also affected population growth. Nevertheless, the continent as whole currently has a population growth rate of 3%.

Africa can be divided into five regions: North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa. Each of these represents a cultural and geographic region which is different from the others in many ways. The four main language families are: Afro-Asiatic, Niger-Congo, and Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan.
